Plot hard to follow, absolutely no action, very disappointing comparer tout the "old" McDermid as in the Tony Hill books.

Karen Pirie, Detective Inspector with the historic case unit of Scotland‘s police, reopens a cold case when an accident with several teenagers shows DNA links to a 20-year-old unsolved murder. A male relative of the young driver, now in coma, can be connected with Tina McDonald’s case. Yet, things are not as easy as it seems first: the driver was adopted and getting access to the files will require a lot of persuading. At the same time a supposed suicide attracts Karen’s attention. What makes her doubt this explanation is the fact that the victim’s mother was killed in a never fully explained plane crash. IRA terrorists were suspected at the time, but nobody has ever been convicted and murder normally does not run in families. Even though it is not her case, she starts digging not knowing what she is going to unearth…“Out of bounds” is a novel in the series of the Cold Case Squad of Fife centred around Detective Inspector Karen Pirie. Even though, I did not know one of the preceding novels – “A Distant Echo” (2003), “A Darker Domain” (2008), “The Skeleton Road” (2014) – I did not have any major problems getting into the story. There are some hints to Karen’s private life in the past, she seems to have lost her partner not too long ago, but this is not crucial for the plot or to understand the character’s action. The two cases that the protagonist works on are both attractive crime scenarios: one solved by a DNA match which does not turn out to be as simple to solve as expected and going into details of biology and genetic engineering as well as legal questions about which information connected with adoptions should be provided to whom. This is found most interesting for the case since it forces you to make up your mind about such a situation and how you would opt. The second case is not too far thematically from this one since here also questions of parenthood and DNA proof pop up. Nevertheless, this is much more complicated than the first. All in all, the story moves at a high pace, shifting from one case to the other, providing a bit of information here and then going on somewhere else – this seems quite authentic in police work, since there is always some waiting time when you have to look at something different. As presumed, Val McDermid manages to solve both cases without leaving and questions unanswered. As always with her, we do have another crime novel full of suspense which does not need any blood or excess of violence to get keep your attention.

... let go when they have driven their tiny teeth into a prey. The Historic Crimes Unit of Police Scotland should normally cover only so-called "Cold Crimes". But when the joy-riding of 4 drunken lads ends with 3 of them killed and the driver in a coma, the routine blood-tests come back with a hit on a 20-year old DNA match for the rape and murder of a young girl. Not a direct hit, but there is a familiarity of the boy in coma to a male much older relative. Bad for DCI Pirie that the boy in question was adopted. And now there are to fight a lot of bureaucratically hurdles to get the name of the relative - the possible killer. About the same time a mentally disturbed young man called Gabriel is found with a gunshot wound to his head. First the death is classified as suicide, then as murder, then as a suicide again - the verdict is still open. But the mother of Gabriel was murdered, too! 24 years ago on an exploded private plane together with 3 other persons, probably caused by an IRA bomb. But Karen knows one thing for sure - the fact that murder does not run in families like an illness. Against the order of her rather misogynist superiors she and her faithful helper Jason start digging in the life of more than one prominent person. So she has to bear the consequences which may put her life in danger. But since her partner Phil was killed in the line of duty, Karen is not very interested in being dead or alive any more...This 30th thriller written by Val McDermid is the 4th in a series about HCU Scotland's DCI Karen Pirie. But even without having read the previous ones there is no difficulty to follow the plot and to become soon very familiar with the main acting persons. It is of general knowledge that Cold cases are usually a lot different to work than "fresh cases". But with the help of some long-time female friends - and some male, too - Karen will get all her pending cases solved. Cold or not, she gets the results. And retribution and justice for the victims from the past AND the present. A lot of really interesting investigation kept me reading on and on - until the very end. A most satisfying book that confirms once again the author Val McDermid as one of the best female contemporary crime-writers.Only one fact doesn't completely satisfy my expectations: The author sometimes goes down a bit too harsh on the male counterparts of our heroine. Makes them look like some under-grade students when a complete co-operation would bring out a better result. And the book would merit a 5-star-rating.Maybe the next time, then...(Review for the kindle ebook, bought and verified on amazon.it)
